New Year, New You. 10 Skincare Resolutions for 2017

by Rio Rosa Mosqueta on January 3, 2017

Winter weather, Christmas festivities and New Year’s Eve celebrations can all take their toll on our skin, which is why January is a great time to make some skincare resolutions! If your skin is in need of a pick-me-up or you simply want to overhaul your routine, read our list of skincare resolutions you should be making this year below…

1. Get your beauty sleep

It’s called beauty sleep for a reason! Sleep is good for your body, brain and skin, and if you don’t get enough it can seriously affect your complexion. When we sleep, our body repairs itself and removes toxins. If you don’t get enough shut-eye, you can develop dark circles under your eyes and your complexion can become dull. Try to get between 7-9 hours a night and give your skin a boost by applying a regular night treatment for extra hydration.

2. Eat your way to better skin

Making sure you get your 5-a-day isn’t just beneficial to your overall health, it’s great for your skin too! Fruits and vegetables contain lots of skin-boosting nutrients that help to improve skin tone and healthy cell development. Not keen on greens? Blend them in a smoothie with your favourite fruit – we love spinach, cucumber, banana and pineapple.

3. Ditch microbeads

Microbeads have hit the headlines recently with the UK Government pledging to ban their use in cosmetics by the end of this year. We think this is great news, as microbeads can get into our waterways where fish can eat them and plastic can leach into the food chain. They can be found in many chemical-based exfoliators and scrubs – if you’re unsure whether a product you’re using contains them, look at the packaging for these ingredients: polyethylene, polypropylene, polymethylmethacrylate, PET, PTFE & PMMA. Bamboo powder is much safer and a 100% natural option, which is why we use it in our Skin Brightening Exfoliator.

4. Always remove your makeup before bed

However tired you are, you should always remove your makeup before bed. Sleeping in your makeup can lead to blocked pores, breakouts and dry skin. Remember to cleanse, tone and moisturise to keep your skin in tip-top, healthy condition.

5. Protect your skin from the sun

UV rays account for 80% of the skin’s visible ageing including wrinkles and hyperpigmentation – with even winter sun capable of causing damage! Make sure you protect your skin by applying SPF daily and ensuring your day cream contains sun protection.

6. Give your hands TLC

As we grow older, our hands are the first place to show signs of ageing with wrinkles, age spots and dryness becoming more prominent as the years go by. Washing and exposure to the elements can strip the natural oils from your skin, so make sure to keep them soft and supple by applying a hand cream throughout the day.

7. Don’t forget your neck!

Our necks can sometimes get neglected when it comes to skincare, and can quite often be an afterthought once we’ve applied product to our face. The skin on your neck can be a tell-tale sign of ageing, so you should always make sure you include it in your skincare regime. If you don’t want to buy a separate neck cream, try a product with a dual purpose like our Face & Decolletage Firming Serum.

8. Give your eyes some special treatment

It’s easy to skip parts of your skin routine when you’re in a rush, but you should always make time to give the skin around your eyes some special attention. The skin around our eyes is more delicate, prone to dryness and shows signs of ageing much sooner than other parts of the face. Make sure it’s hydrated with a cream that’s specially formulated for eyes. Ours is blended with Eyebright, White Tea and Hyaluronic Acid to tighten, brighten and refresh.

9. Pay attention to ingredients

It’s hard to find skincare products nowadays that don’t claim to contain natural ingredients – but how do you know if they truly are 100% natural? If you want to adopt a clean beauty routine you should be paying attention to the ingredients in the products you use. Avoid skincare that contains nasties like parabens, paraffin, petrochemicals, sulphates, synthetic fragrance, synthetic colour, PEG, TEA and DEA.

10. Moisturise your skin daily

Winter can leave our skin feeling dry, itchy and dehydrated thanks to central heating and harsh weather conditions. Make sure you replenish your skin’s moisture after bathing by applying a rich, nourishing body butter. Ours contains soothing Shea Butter and Aloe Vera blended with Chilean Rosehip Seed Oil to hydrate your skin.
